Sediment Erosion Generated by a Coandă-Effect-Based Polymetallic-Nodule Collector

چکیده
To date, hydraulic collection is the most widely considered technology in polymetallic-nodule mining, since there no direct contact between collectors and ocean floor. construct a collector that results least sediment disturbance, it critical to develop an insightful understanding of interaction bed. this end, we conducted set small-scale experiments which several operational conditions were tested, delivering first quantitative data for erosion resulting from driving over sand This paper presents discusses experimental observations. It found collector’s forward velocity inversely proportional bed-sediment depth, bed exposed flow longer time when drives slower vice versa. In contrast, increased jet leads larger depth. Furthermore, underside nearer bed, layer water flow, Finally, show jets strike under inclined angle, destabilizing upper consequently dragging particles along toward duct behind head. study improves predictability created by Coandă-effect-based collectors, crucial asset optimize design decrease extent associated plumes.

Draft Genome Sequence of Microbacterium profundi Shh49T, an Actinobacterium Isolated from Deep-Sea Sediment of a Polymetallic Nodule Environment
Microbacterium profundi strain Shh49(T) was isolated from deep-sea sediment from a polymetallic nodule area located in the East Pacific Ocean. Strain Shh49(T) contains genes related to the reduction/oxidation of metals. It has potential application in the bioremediation of heavy metal-contaminated environments.
متن کاملErosion patterns in a sediment layer.
We report here on a laboratory-scale experiment which reproduces a rich variety of natural patterns with few control parameters. In particular, we focus on intriguing rhomboid structures often found on sandy shores and flats. We show that the standard views based on water surface waves do not explain the phenomenon, and we evidence a different mechanism based on mud avalanche instability.
متن کاملSediment Erosion in Hydraulic Turbines
Sediment erosion not only reduces efficiency and life of hydropower turbines but also causes problems in operation and maintenance. Several factors are responsible for this erosion in hydro turbine components. This paper presents the sediment erosion types in hydraulic turbines and their components based upon an extensive literature review and the field observation at Cahua hydropower plant, Pe...
متن کاملA Reverse Taxonomic Approach to Assess Macrofaunal Distribution Patterns in Abyssal Pacific Polymetallic Nodule Fields
Heightened interest in the exploitation of deep seafloor minerals is raising questions on the consequences for the resident fauna. Assessing species ranges and determination of processes underlying current species distributions are prerequisites to conservation planning and predicting faunal responses to changing environmental conditions. The abyssal central Pacific nodule belt, located between...
